Are well behaved dogs really happy?

24/07/2024

It’s easy to assume that well-behaved dogs aren’t happy. After all, we tend to link happiness with excitement—things like wagging tails, jumping up, or playful barking. But excitement often leads to unwanted behaviours like pulling on the leash or barking at visitors.

Well-behaved dogs, on the other hand, are typically calmer. And calmness is often mistaken for boredom or even unhappiness. But is that true?

Is Excitement the Same as Happiness?

Not really. Think about your own life. Are you constantly excited? Probably not. Most of us would give anything for a quiet hour to relax and unwind after a busy day.

Here’s something you might not know: excitement and stress both trigger similar hormones in the body. While excitement may come with a little extra endorphins, too much of it can overwhelm the body and mind. Excess stress hormones are linked to long-term health problems like cancer, autoimmune diseases, and poor mental health.

So while excitement has its place, it isn’t the same as true happiness.

What Does a Happy Dog Look Like?

A happy dog is relaxed. They’re not stressed, overexcited, or withdrawn. Instead, they’re content and engaged in the things that bring them joy.

But here’s the thing: happiness looks different for every dog.

Every Dog is Unique

Just like people, every dog has their own version of happiness. What one dog finds fun might stress another out.

For example:

  • Some dogs love sniffing and meandering walks and definitely not interacting with other dogs.
  • Other dogs may enjoy playing with another dog.

It’s similar to us as humans. I enjoy gardening, crafting, and writing—things some might find boring. I don’t enjoy parties or big gatherings, even though others love the excitement.

Your dog’s happiness depends on what they enjoy and feel comfortable with—not how “excited” they are.

How to Tell if Your Dog is Happy

A happy dog is:

  • Calm and relaxed.
  • Engaged in activities they enjoy.
  • Comfortable in their environment.

If your dog seems stressed, overexcited, or overwhelmed, they might need some help finding balance.
