What is a well behaved dog?

01/12/2024

If you asked 100 people, you’d get 100 different answers. For most, a well-behaved dog doesn’t jump on visitors, comes when called, walks nicely on a leash, and listens to basic commands.

But does that mean every dog needs to follow the same rules?

Every Dog is Different

What works for one dog may not work for another. For example, some people don’t allow dogs on the bed or couch, believing it causes guarding issues. While that’s true for some dogs, others handle it just fine.

In my home, our dogs sleep in bed with us and hop on the couch whenever they want—but if it ever caused issues, those privileges would change. Each dog’s behaviour and personality should guide the rules we set for them.

When Problems Arise

If a dog starts guarding resources (like a couch or food), it’s time to address the behaviour. Resource guarding often stems from an underlying issue, like a strained relationship or unclear boundaries.

For example:

  • If an older dog growls at a younger dog invading their space, I’d support the older dog and stop the pestering.
  • If a younger dog guarded the couch from me, I’d set boundaries and seek a trainer’s help if needed.

It’s okay to ask for guidance—sometimes we’re too close to the situation to see the problem clearly. In fact if we don't do the right thing, we can make the problem worse, and end up with a dog bite. Yes, I have helped owners recover a relationship, even from here. A bite does not always mean the dog should be put to sleep.

Should You Take Food From Your Dog?

No, and here’s why: taking food from a dog can damage your relationship and create unnecessary problems.

Think about it—how would you feel if someone snatched your plate mid-meal? Most of us wouldn’t react kindly! Dogs are the same.

That said, in emergencies (like if your dog grabs something dangerous), a strong relationship based on trust will allow you to intervene safely. This takes time to build, and doesn't happen just because you paid for your dog and feed them.

What Makes a Well-Behaved Dog?

To me, a well-behaved dog is one that makes your life better.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start by asking yourself:

  • Does my dog make my life easier and more joyful?
  • Where is my dog adding stress or challenges?

No dog is perfect, but we can always work toward a better relationship and manners. And remember, your dog is yours—you get to decide the rules that work for your life, no matter what others think.
